What Are Crowns and Why Do I Need One?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a prepared tooth, restoring its ideal shape and improving its long-term prognosis if heavily restored or weakened. Crowns can be made from different materials, such as porcelain/ceramic, metal, or a combination.
They can blend with your natural teeth in shape and colour, restoring strength, function, and appearance, particularly when a tooth is too damaged to support a standard filling.
When Might a Crown Be Recommended?
Your dentist may suggest a crown in situations such as:
- A tooth with a large filling where not much natural tooth remains.
- A tooth that has cracked or is at high risk of fracture.
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment and needs additional protection.
- A misshapen or discoloured tooth that would benefit from cosmetic improvement.
- A tooth being restored as part of a dental bridge or implant.
In each case, the aim is to protect the tooth, restore its function, and improve the way it looks in your smile.
What Is Involved in Getting a Crown?
Having a crown usually involves two main visits. At the first appointment, your dentist will:
- Numb the tooth and surrounding area for comfort.
- Shape the tooth to create space for the crown.
- Take impressions or digital scans to send to the dental laboratory.
- Select the appropriate shade to match your other teeth.
- Place a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your custom crown is made.
At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the new crown is tried in. Your dentist will check the fit and bite, make any necessary adjustments, and then cement the crown into place once you are happy.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With good care, crowns can last for many years, typically 15–20 years or longer. Their lifespan depends on factors such as:
- The material used for the crown.
- Your oral hygiene habits and diet.
- Whether you clench or grind your teeth.
- Regular dental check-ups and maintenance.
Crowns still need diligent brushing and interdental cleaning, and the underlying tooth can still develop decay or gum problems if plaque is not removed effectively. Wearing a night guard over your crown(s) may be recommended if you grind your teeth.
