Top Tips for Preventing Gum Disease at Home

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems, but it is also one of the most preventable. It usually starts as gingivitis (gingival inflammation), where the gums become red, swollen, and may bleed when you brush or floss. This results from incomplete or ineffective plaque control at home.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone that supports your teeth is progressively lost. This causes gaps to open up between the teeth as the bone and gum recedes, which leads to food and plaque traps, making it much more difficult to keep the teeth plaque-free. Teeth become loose, sometimes moving away from their original position, and if enough bone recedes over time, teeth can even be lost. Protecting your gums now helps you avoid more complex treatment later.

Get the Basics Right: Brushing

Effective brushing is your first line of defence against gum disease. Aim to:

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Angle the bristles at 45 degrees towards the gumline.
  • Gently move the brush in small circular or tiny back-and-forth motions.

Take at least two minutes, and make sure you clean the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces of every tooth.

Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can damage your gums and cause them to recede, and can even cause notching into the teeth themselves!

Don't Forget Between Your Teeth

Plaque loves to hide between the teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach. Cleaning these spaces daily is essential for gum health.

Depending on your mouth, your dentist may recommend:

  • Dental floss.
  • Interdental brushes.
  • A water flosser (oral irrigator).

Choose a method (or methods) that you are likely to stick with and ask your dentist or hygienist to demonstrate the technique if you are unsure.

Once it becomes part of your routine, interdental cleaning usually takes only a few minutes each day.

Healthy Lifestyle, Healthier Gums

Your lifestyle choices play a big role in your gum health. Helpful steps include:

  • Limiting sugary snacks and drinks that feed plaque bacteria.
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C.
  • Avoiding or quitting smoking, which is a major risk factor for gum disease.
  • Managing conditions like diabetes with the help of your healthcare team.

Staying hydrated by drinking water throughout the day also helps wash away food particles and bacteria and can support fresher breath.

Work with Your Dental Team

Home care is essential, but it does not replace professional dental care. Regular check-ups and professional cleans allow your dental team to remove hardened tartar and monitor your gums for early signs of disease.

If you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, or sensitivity, it is important to book a check-up rather than waiting to see if it passes.
